MDC Architectural Student Society Take Home First Prize

Miami, December 4, 2013 - It’s been said, “If you build it, they will come.” And build it they did! Miami Dade College (MDC) Architecture Student Society members took home a monumental prize in this year’s American Institute of Architects (AIA) Miami Chapter Annual Sandblast sand sculpture competition.

The Kendall Campus students dug deep into Crandon Park’s soil and carved out a model of a pyramid from Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula as part of the AIA’s theme depicting a world- renowned monument. The group of freshmen and sophomores clinched first place over the other competing institutions from DASH, FIU, and UM during the four-hour activity. The competition is part of a month-long series of events hosted by the AIA-Miami termed Celebrate Architecture + Design.

“I made sure to raise students’ awareness of their future transition from architecture student to architecture professional through firsthand involvement with the local architecture professional organization, AIA Miami,” said Mario F. Ortega, professor of architecture and founder of the MDC Architecture Student Society.

Membership in the Architecture Student Society rewards students with exposure to architectural events such as the Sandblast competition and to professionals within the field. Other opportunities include special, academic recognitions. This year, the president of the Architecture Student Society, Kevin Arango, was named MDC Architecture Student of the Year during the AIA’s gala event.
