Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente Recognized as “Dedicated Community Leader” by South Florida Youth Symphony

Miami, January 9, 2014 - For his steadfast support and dedication to the arts, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente was recently honored by the South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYS) at the organization’s annual holiday concert. Dr. Vicente has been an avid supporter and sponsor of the youth group for the past 15 years, and was presented with a plaque recognizing his dedication, not only to the Youth Symphony, but also for stimulating and promoting the arts and music for youth across the county for many years.

“Dr. Vicente is a truly dedicated community leader, supporting the total development of our area’s youth, especially within the arts”, said the Youth Symphony’s Executive and Musical Director Marjorie Hahn. “We are forever grateful for his, and the entire administration’s, continued sponsorship and support.”

Housed at MDC’s North Campus, the Youth Symphony has fostered the classical musical development of local youth for the past 50 years. Its holiday concert was held at the North Campus’ Lehman Theatre in collaboration with the Film Score Orchestra of MDC.

“The arts serve as yet another gateway for youth from varied socio-economic backgrounds to recognize and grow to their full potential,” said Dr. Vicente, who enjoyed a remarkable tenure as North Campus president before assuming the role of Wolfson Campus president in 2013. “MDC’s continued support to the South Florida Youth Symphony ensures the organization will touch the lives of children and young adults for generations to come.”

The Youth Symphony’s recognition of Dr. Vicente’s adds to his many local and national awards and accolades for being a tireless advocate for education and the arts. The transformative educator began his tenure at MDC four decades ago and has served in a number of administrative and leadership positions, including Associate Dean of Academic Support, Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of Administrative Services, and as President of several campuses.
