Spain’s first female Minister of Defense Carme Chacon Piqueras to Kick-off Kendall Campus’ Celebration of Women’s History Month


Miami, February 25, 2014 - Carme Chacón Piqueras, Spain’s first female Minister of Defense and a professor in residence at Miami Dade College, will kick-off the Kendall Campus’ Women’s History Month celebration on Wednesday, March 5. Chacón will speak on women in politics, leadership positions and public service. Held from 11 a.m. - noon in room 6120, the event will be hosted by the Chair of MDC’s social sciences department, Dr. Lourdes Rassi, and MDC professor Sandra M. Castillo. The event is free and open to the public.  

Chacón, who served as defense minister from 2008-2011, joined MDC for the 2013-2014 academic year and has led a number of college-wide initiatives. Born in Catalonia, Spain, Chacón has served in many key governmental capacities including as Minister of Defense of Spain, Vice President of Spain’s Parliament, and Minister of Housing, among other high-level posts.

As part of the month-long celebration, the Campus is also hosting a “Women in Journalism” panel discussion on Tuesday, March 11, with veteran Miami Herald journalists Bea Hines and Nancy San Martin. Hines was the newspaper’s first African-American female reporter and San Martin, a long-time South Florida journalist, is the paper’s interactive editor. The panel discussion will take place from 11:15 a.m. - noon in room 6120.  

 And on Thursday, March 20, the English department’s A Good Read program will present a book presentation and discussion based on Claire of the Sea Light. The event will occur from 11:15 a.m. - noon in room R 402 and 403.

Women’s History Month activities take place throughout March to bring awareness about women’s achievements and to inspire diverse communities to come together.
