Miami, May 12, 2014 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus and the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center (MEEC) will commemorate Haitian Flag Day with two ceremonies. The North Campus event will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14 in the Lehman Theater. The event at MEEC will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21.

Flag Day, May 18, 1803, commemorates the date when Haitian leaders of slave troops fighting for freedom in Haiti eliminated the white stripe from the French flag to illustrate their unity. They created a new flag from the remaining blue and red stripes, fought on, and declared independence the following New Year's Day.

This year’s theme, Building on a Legacy of Culture, and Tradition, highlights the Caribbean island’s cultural traditions and the strength of its people. The North Campus event will include a keynote address by Lieutenant Nate Lasseur, founder and president of International Firefighters Assistance and a 14-year fire rescue veteran. Lieutenant Lasseur has been an advocate for providing much-needed fire rescue equipment to Haiti, and has been recognized for his leadership efforts on many occasions.

“North Campus salutes our Haitian-American students, faculty and staff on this revered Haitian Heritage Month and Flag Day,” said Malou C. Harrison, president of the North Campus. “Our institution proudly embraces the rich culture of the Island Republic of Haiti, and we’re pleased to celebrate the many formidable contributions of the people of Haiti and its diaspora.”

The free program at each venue is open to the public, will also feature a variety of educational and cultural performances. The North Campus is located at 11380 NW 27 Ave. MEEC is located at 6300 NW 7 Ave.
