Miami Dade College’s School of Education Opens New Library at its Exploration Station Preschool

Preschool library 1

Miami, May 12, 2014 - To nurture a new generation of readers and promote literacy, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Education recently opened the doors to a new library within its Exploration Station preschool, located at MDC’s North Campus.

Adorned with rainbow-colored drawings, the library contains more than 3,000 books. The preschool’s longest-attending students, Valeria Puelles and Justin Everett, did the ribbon-cutting honors at the grand opening ceremony.

Weekly library visits will be incorporated into the school’s STEM-focused curriculum, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students will have the opportunity to check out books and later return them at the drop box in the shape of an old school house located in the lobby. Future plans include adding books geared toward parents, with topics such as healthy eating and scientific research.

The preschool has more than 100 students and serves children ages six weeks through pre-kindergarten. It is one of the only STEM-focused preschools in Miami-Dade County. In addition to the new library, the facility includes a science room, two playgrounds, a tricycle path, and a vegetable garden.

The preschool also serves as a demonstration site for MDC students pursuing degrees in early childhood education. It is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, which sets professional standards for early childhood education programs throughout the U.S., and has also received the Gold Seal from the Florida Department of Children and Families.
