Miami, June 3, 2014 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Funeral Service Education program continues meeting the demand for workforce professionals in key areas with the implementation of its new Funeral Director certificate program.

Everybody is looking for help,” said David Lowery, past president of the Florida Funeral Directors Association and vice president of Panciera Family Funeral Care in Hollywood, FL. “The National Funeral Directors Association predicts a serious employment shortage within 10 years. Graduates from this program are expected to gain employment as soon as they complete their degree. The faculty and staff are truly dedicated to offer this opportunity to South Florida residents.”

The Florida Funeral Director certificate program is intended for individuals who have obtained a prior degree from an accredited institution and intend to transition into a new career path.  Funeral Directors arrange the details and handle the logistics of funerals, assist the family in establishing the location, date, and time of wakes, memorial services, and burials. Successful completion of the Florida Funeral Director certificate program facilitates student eligibility for the Florida Funeral Directors State Licensing Exam.

Miami Dade College has once again taken a responsive posture toward industry dynamics,” said Malou C. Harrison, president of the North Campus. “We’re proud that our Funeral Service Education program is continuing its legacy of producing highly trained professionals in this new and significant pathway.”

Students are projected to complete the degree within 18 months and registration is currently underway. MDC’s funeral program is a pioneering program in the region and internationally renowned.
