BANKERS CAMP L

Miami, June 9, 2014 - Throughout the month of June, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Business and the Center for Financial Training will host a Future Banker’s Camp. Sponsored by CareerSource South Florida and 15 local banks (including FIBA & South Florida Banking Institute), the camp aims to provide hands-on experience for high school students interested in careers in the financial services industry. The educational component will take place from June 2–13, at the Wolfson Campus, and the internships will run June 16–27.

The Future Bankers’ Camp is preparing a total of 45 students enrolled in Academy of Finance programs at Barbara Goleman Senior High School, Coral Gables Senior High School, Coral Reef Senior High School, Mater Academy Senior High School, Miami Jackson Senior High School, North Miami Beach Senior High School, and Sunset Senior High School. This innovative program will provide students with various educational opportunities to enhance their math, communication and financial literacy skills, including completion of an internship program and industry certification with the goal of preparing them for college and careers in financial services. This initiative is also aligned with the school district’s partnership and involvement in the One Community One Goal targeted Industry Implementation Plan.

“The Future Bankers’ Camp will provide students with the opportunity to be prepared for their future professional careers in the financial services industry,” said Abel Iglesias, chairman of the Center for Financial Training and executive vice president of Professional Bank.

"This camp has been hosted at MDC for seven years, thanks to the skillful leadership of Ms. Connie Laguna, Executive Director of The Center for Financial Training,” said Rafo Saldaña, Dean of the School of Business of MDC. “We are proud of our long-term, consistent support to the important financial services industry in South Florida."

Upon successful completion of the camp, students are eligible to receive the American Bankers Association/American Institute of Banking (AIB) Bank Teller Certificate.
