Prometeo Theatre Students to Complete 2-Year Program, Perform Othello for International Hispanic Theatre Festival

Seven MDC Baseball Players Drafted in 2009 Major League Baseball Draft

Innovative Training Program Fills Critical Need for Next Generation of Energy Industry Employees

In the midst of difficult economic times, bright futures await 17 graduates of Miami Dade College’s Electrical Power Technology Program. Today, in a ceremony held on Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Homestead Campus, 13 graduates were presented letters of employment. Four other graduates, who already work for Florida Power & Light Company, received FPL job promotions due to the specialized education they successfully completed at the Program.

Miami Dade College’s School for Advanced Studies Named Among Nation’s Best in Newsweek Magazine’s Top High Schools List

The only full-time dual enrollment public high school in Miami-Dade County is enjoying top billing this week thanks to prominent recognition in Newsweek magazine’s recently released list of the nation’s top public high schools in 2009. MDC's Hospitality Institute to Offer Customer Service Training and Job Opportunities to Inner City Residents

Last fall, Miami Dade College launched its new Center for Service Excellence (CSE) at the annual meeting of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau aimed at providing customer service training to the region’s businesses and business organizations. Now, MDC has launched the Hospitality Institute within the CSE to specifically connect job opportunities in the local hospitality industry with Miami’s inner city residents through customer service and job readiness training. More than 350 people have gone through the Institute already.

South Florida Workforce Board Announces Major Grant for Take Stock in Children of Miami-Dade

Breaking the cycle of poverty can be a daunting challenge, but thanks to Take Stock in Children (TSIC), a program that helps kids from disadvantaged homes succeed academically, that dream is becoming a reality for many children. In an effort to continue serving and increasing the number of students in the program who receive temporary assistance funds, the South Florida Workforce Board recently announced the award of $300,000 to Take Stock in Children (TSIC) of Miami-Dade, which is housed at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus. In fact, Rick Beasley, executive director of South Florida Workforce, presented TSIC with the check at a meeting of the College’s District Board of Trustees April 22, 2009.

City of Miami Proposes $200 million Energy Efficiency Initiative, Choosing MDC to Make the Announcement

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz today announced groundbreaking energy initiative, Energy Smart Miami, that proposes to use federal economic stimulus funds to help spur a $200 million investment in “Smart Grid” technology and renewable energy over the next two years. Miami Dade College Honored Successful Alumni at its Annual Alumni Hall of Fame Gala April 16 Raising nearly $700,000 for Scholarships

The 2009 class of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Alumni Hall of Fame includes attorneys, a physician, an accountant, journalists, an artist, professional golfer and many other top and successful professionals. MDC presented 23 alumni with its top recognition, induction into the college’s Alumni Hall of Fame, at a gala dinner on April 16 at Jungle Island. A special tribute video was played as each honoree came up to the stage during what was a magical evening. More importantly, nearly $700,000 were raised for scholarships eclipsing last year’s amount.

More than 9,000 will graduate from Miami Dade College on May 2

Miami Dade College will graduate more than 9,000 students at six commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 2. Also graduating are the first 40 students to earn a bachelor’s in nursing from MDC. MDC will confer 7,800 associate degrees, 205 bachelor’s degrees as well as college credit and career certificates. Sixty-four percent of graduates are Hispanic, 23 percent are black and 10 percent are white non-Hispanic. Together, these graduates represent 106 countries and speak 45 languages.

Fifth Annual Dr. Armando J. Bucelo Sr. High School Chess Tournament at MDC Draws Top Talent

The Fifth Annual Dr. Armando J. Bucelo Sr. High School Chess Tournament at Miami Dade College (MDC) once again drew some of the region’s top chess players on March 21, 2009 with MDC’s School for Advanced Studies at the Wolfson Campus winning the contest. Held in the Chapman Conference Center at the Wolfson Campus, 70 players from 14 high schools participated. In attendance were MDC Trustee, prominent Coral Gables attorney and major chess supporter, Armando Bucelo Jr., and his father and chess master, for whom the tourney is named, Armando Bucelo Sr.

Miami International Film Festival, presented by Miami Dade College, Announces 2009 Line Up

The Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), presented by Miami Dade College (MDC), today announced highlights of its 26th edition, running Friday, March 6 – Sunday, March 15, 2009. The complete film slate is available at www.MiamiFilmFestival.com. The 137 selections for this year’s Festival represent more than 40 countries. Along with 40 shorts are 97 feature-length films, including four world premieres, 22 North American premieres and 18 U.S. premieres.
