Coaches Association Names MDC’s Benoit as Southeast Region Coach of the Year

When it comes to winning, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) women’s volleyball team is nearly unstoppable. The team’s accomplishments include a near-perfect 2009 season and numerous state and national championship appearances. Now, its coach has added to that winning tradition. Coach Origenes “Kiko” Benoit’s was recently selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) Two-Year College Southeast Region as Coach of the Year.

MDC and Miami Central High School's Joint Service-Learning Project Collects Hundreds of Decorated Shoes for Children in Haiti

A service mission involving students from both Miami Dade College and Miami Dade County Public Schools brought sole relief to hundreds of disadvantaged children in Haiti last week, when approximately 400 pairs of uniquely decorated shoes were donated to Food For The Poor (FFTP), a South Florida-based international relief and development organization, for the people of Haiti.

North Campus to Unveil World’s Largest Recycled Aluminum Ball

At Miami Dade College’s North Campus, recycling is taking a new shape. On Thursday, Dec. 10, students will finalize their attempt at creating the world’s largest recycled aluminum ball, which they hope will earn a Guinness World Record.

Miami International Film Festival Accepting Submissions for its Florida Focus Short Film Competition

The Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), a Miami Dade College (MDC) cultural experience, recently announced its second annual Florida-based film competition. Festival organizers will accept submissions for the Florida Focus Short Film Competitions from Nov. 23 until Dec. 31, 2009. Winners will be announced during the 27th Edition of the Miami International Film Festival (March 5-14, 2010).

Miami Dade College’s Acclaimed Center for Service Excellence to Serve as Training Arm of "Miami Begins with MIA" Initiative

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Center for Service Excellence (CSE) is quickly becoming the first choice for the region’s corporate training needs. It’s making great strides, especially, in helping businesses succeed in tough economic times. During the recent Annual Meeting of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) at the Fontainebleau Hotel, an announcement was made by incoming chairperson, Steve Haas, that the GMCVB, along with Miami International Airport, will soon begin a new phase of the customer service initiative called “Miami Begins with MIA” in which the CSE will play a significant role. The CSE was officially launched at the Annual Meeting of the GMCVB in 2008.

Important Designations for Miami Dade College in Appropriations Bills Recently Signed by President Obama

President Barack Obama has signed into law two appropriations measures containing funds designated for Miami Dade College (MDC). The FY2010 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill includes $400,000 for MDC’s Hialeah Campus and the FY 2010 Interior-Environment Appropriations bill contains $500,000 for the National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower at MDC.

Miami Book Fair International Offers Mix of Literary Talent With Popular Evenings Series and Various Author Presentations Nov. 8-13

Miami Book Fair International (Fair) will again treat book lovers to a week of cultural and educational activities, including a bevy of author presentations beginning Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus. The author presentations will begin with award-winning poet, essayist and scholar Elizabeth Alexander at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8. Alexander is best known for writing and delivering President Barack Obama’s inaugural poem, Praise Song for the Day. She is the author of five poetry collections, most recently American Sublime (2005), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in poetry, and is currently a professor of African American Studies at Yale University.

MDC Receives Major Grant to Address Rising Costs of Textbooks by Implementing Trailblazing Program

Miami Dade College Urges Students to Register Early for Spring Term

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) leadership is again urging students to register early for the 2010 spring term. Registration opens Monday, Oct. 12, 2009. The surge in enrollment and budget cuts have impacted the registration process. Last fall, many students were unable to register for certain classes; some were totally unable to register, because the College was not able to add more class sections due to budget cuts.

Miami Dade College Offers Auctioneer License Exam Preparation Course

An auctioneer’s chant requires a special technique as does the ability to conduct auctions for just about any type of item, from E-Bay to a livestock auction. An 80-hour course now offered at Miami Dade College (MDC) will teach these skills and prepare students for the state license exam. Scheduled for October 19 through October 30, 2009, the Auctioneer License Exam Preparation course will be held at the Kendall Campus, 11011 S.W. 104th Street, on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course is one of several being offered by the College’s Workforce and Professional Training Program within its renowned School of Community Education.

Miami Dade College President Named to Advisory Commission of the National Museum of the American Latino

During his four decade career in higher education, Miami Dade College (MDC) President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón has served on numerous important national boards, including those he was appointed to by four U.S. Presidents, championing greater access and quality in higher education and placing MDC in the national spotlight. Now, he’s been appointed to the Advisory Commission of the National Museum of the American Latino. Retired U.S. Senator Mel Martinez recommended Dr. Padrón for appointment to this Commission and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made it one of his appointments. Dr. Padrón joins music mogul Emilio Estefan and other important leaders on the Commission.

Miami Dade College Assists Local Charity Effort in Collecting Shoes for Disadvantaged Residents in Haiti and Jamaica

A partnership between Miami Dade College (MDC) students and healthcare workers at Coconut Grove’s Sister Emmanuel Hospital has been established to provide adequate shoes for disadvantaged residents living in Haiti and Jamaica. The donation drive, “These Boots Are Made For Walking” will accept used and new shoes at several MDC campuses until Oct. 7, 2009.

Continuing its tradition of bringing the best of world cinema to South Florida, The Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), Miami Dade College (MDC) and Centro Cultural Español (CCE)-Miami, will host the Festival of New Spanish Cinema, an eclectic collection of Spanish films during a weeklong festival beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 11 at MDC’s Tower Theater in Little Havana. The event will kick-off with a cocktail reception sponsored by Freixenet and the screening of director David Planell The Shame/ La Vergüenza. The Festival of New Spanish Cinema’s visit next month is part of a six-city tour that will culminate in Chicago in November 2009.

Citi Foundation Awards MDC School of Business its Third Grant to Help Strengthen Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners

Miami Dade College Land Conveyance Act Signed into Law by President Barack Obama

President Barack Obama has signed into law today a bill providing for the conveyance of a parcel of land held by the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Miami Dade College (MDC) Land Conveyance Act, H.R.838. It was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in March and its Senate companion bill, S. 814, introduced by Senator Bill Nelson, met with approval in the United States Senate in July.

Miami Dade College Receives Major Grant from U.S. Department of Education Emergency Management Program

The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) announced on July 9th that Miami Dade College (MDC) was selected to receive a $499,999 grant from the Emergency Management for Higher Education Program. The major grant, which took effect this month, will help the college with its existing and future emergency planning activities. Former MDC Student Dances His Way into National Spotlight on Televised Hit Show

After auditioning last year for a coveted spot on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD),” Brandon Bryant was eliminated just before making it to the Top 20 round – it was his second attempt. Undeterred, the former Miami Dade College (MDC) dance major joined a professional dance troupe in Salt Lake City, Utah then auditioned when Season Five auditions were held in the western U.S. city earlier this year.

MDC's Hospitality Institute to Offer Customer Service Training and Job Opportunities to Inner City Residents

Last fall, Miami Dade College launched its new Center for Service Excellence (CSE) at the annual meeting of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau aimed at providing customer service training to the region’s businesses and business organizations. Breaking the cycle of poverty can be a daunting challenge, but thanks to Take Stock in Children (TSIC), a program that helps kids from disadvantaged homes succeed academically, that dream is becoming a reality for many children. In an effort to continue serving and increasing the number of students in the program who receive temporary assistance funds, the South Florida Workforce Board recently announced the award of $300,000 to Take Stock in Children (TSIC) of Miami-Dade, which is housed at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus. In fact, Rick Beasley, executive director of South Florida Workforce, presented TSIC with the check at a meeting of the College’s District Board of Trustees April 22, 2009.

Miami Dade College Honored Successful Alumni at its Annual Alumni Hall of Fame Gala April 16 Raising nearly $700,000 for Scholarships

The 2009 class of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Alumni Hall of Fame includes attorneys, a physician, an accountant, journalists, an artist, professional golfer and many other top and successful professionals. More than 9,000 will graduate from Miami Dade College on May 2

Miami Dade College will graduate more than 9,000 students at six commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 2. Also graduating are the first 40 students to earn a bachelor’s in nursing from MDC. MDC will confer 7,800 associate degrees, 205 bachelor’s degrees as well as college credit and career certificates. Sixty-four percent of graduates are Hispanic, 23 percent are black and 10 percent are white non-Hispanic. Together, these graduates represent 106 countries and speak 45 languages.

Bucelo Sr. High School Chess Tournament at Miami Dade College (MDC) once again drew some of the region’s top chess players on March 21, 2009 with MDC’s School for Advanced Studies at the Wolfson Campus winning the contest. Held in the Chapman Conference Center at the Wolfson Campus, 70 players from 14 high schools participated. In attendance were MDC Trustee, prominent Coral Gables attorney and major chess supporter, Armando Bucelo Jr., and his father and chess master, for whom the tourney is named, Armando Bucelo Sr.

Omnibus Bill Contains Support for MDC Thanks to Members of Local Federal Delegation

Miami International Film Festival, presented by Miami Dade College, Announces 2009 Line Up

The Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), presented by Miami Dade College (MDC), today announced highlights of its 26th edition, running Friday, March 6 – Sunday, March 15, 2009.
