The 2007 United Way Campaign

n August of this year, I had the privilege of announcing that MDC had been chosen as one of the “Saviors of our Cities” institutions. One of the many reasons MDC was chosen for this honor was our longstanding tradition of community service. Evidence of your commitment to our community was clearly demonstrated during the 2006 MDC United Way Campaign. Working together, employees and students raised a total of $112,000 to support the United Way of Miami-Dade. These pledges represented $22,000 or 24% more than our goal of $90,000.

For every unrestricted dollar that we contribute, the United Way is able to obtain a match of $2.01 from other funding sources. For us that means the pledges we raised last year resulted in an estimated $225, 000 additional dollars for our community.

We all know families that have been helped through agencies that receive United Way contributions – Aspira, Boys and Girls Clubs, Children’s Home Society - just to name a few. And, unfortunately, because places in our community, like the City of Miami, continue to be among the poorest in our nation, these programs will continue to be essential. For a list of impact partners and grantees, please log on to http://unitedwaymiami.org/impactpartnerslist.asp

Please join me by making a donation that generously supports the United Way’s community plan of:

  • Helping kids and families lead successful lives
  • Improving health and independence
  • Responding to emergency and basic needs
  • Encouraging neighborhood and civic involvement

You can make your donation this year through the following link:  http://www.mdc.edu/UnitedWay. The link contains all necessary instructions. United Way Ambassadors and Support Team, along with e-mail addresses, are listed below.

A very special thank you is due to Bettie Thompson, who once again has demonstrated her commitment to our community in leading the College's campaign. Thank you to our Ambassadors and Support Team members as well.

MDC's 2007 campaign goal is $95,000, but if history is an indicator, we should far surpass that total. Please do your best to foster hope and opportunity in our community.

Thank you.
