Invitation to National Math Panel Public Meeting
Stakeholders in education and other Miami-Dade community members are invited to attend and participate in a U.S. Department of Education meeting on Wednesday, June 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Appointed by President George W. Bush, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel will convene in the Chapman Conference Center (Building 3, Room 3210) at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus to discuss the best ways to advance the teaching and learning of mathematics. The agenda includes reports to the Panel from five Task Groups: Conceptual Knowledge and Skills, Learning Processes, Instructional Practices, Teachers, and Assessment.
The Panel's initiative to strengthen math education through research ties in with many of MDC's efforts to improve math skills among students, such as the focus on mathematics during our last accreditation review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
This is the Panel's seventh public meeting since the group was created in April 2006. The National Math Panel is chaired by Dr. Larry Faulkner, President Emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin. The distinguished group is comprised of leaders from the nation's top institutions and nonprofit organizations, such as the Brookings Institution, Carnegie Mellon, Vanderbilt, California Berkeley and Cornell universities.
Thank you to Joe Pena, MDC director of federal relations, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing the National Math Panel to MDC and giving our community the opportunity to share in this important educational discussion.
Thank you.
Eduardo
