Message From the President

Monday, August 27, 2007

Welcome to the New Academic Year

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the faculty and staff of MDC as we begin the 2007-2008 academic year. It's a good feeling to have the campuses bustling with activity once again.

Despite a message of austerity from the state of Florida, I prefer to believe there is no limit to what we can achieve this year. As we have learned many times over, our commitment and enthusiasm in working with students and each other will trump any fiscal challenge.

The year holds great promise. Among a wealth of projects from our faculty and staff, we continue to refine our learning outcomes and assessment methodologies. As the year unfolds, faculty will be engaged in discovering means to integrate the outcomes into classroom and co-curricular activities.

And yes, all state institutions have been asked to cut budgets by as much as 10 percent. We will certainly continue discussions with our partners in Tallahassee, but I’m confident that we’ll find an extra 10 percent, at least, in creative energy to support our students. The hallmark of our efforts will always be the dedication and ingenuity of our people. That energy can never be compromised by fiscal constraints.

Welcome back and thank you for all the good things you bring to MDC. I wish you a rewarding and productive year.

Eduardo
