Amendment 8: listening to the voice of our community

There are many ways to measure victory. One may argue that because Amendment 8 did not pass statewide, the campaign was unsuccessful. However, this argument fails to recognize the enormous victory Miami Dade College (MDC) achieved at the polls: an overwhelming 61.2% of Miami-Dade County voters cast their ballots in favor of Amendment 8.  This is simply amazing and leaves no doubt that MDC is the people’s college.

I am touched by the vast support Amendment 8 received from our students, alumni and employees, and from innumerable organizations throughout the community. So many people rallied behind the amendment during the past several months and I cannot express how appreciative I am for all of the selfless volunteerism and educational activism that went on during this campaign. I am especially overwhelmed by the effort that so many of you made on Election Day.

Our fight for local supplemental funding is far from over. The people of Miami Dade County have spoken. We now have undeniable proof that the residents of Miami-Dade County stand behind the College; and with this substantial endorsement, we can engage our Miami-Dade delegation and make an even stronger case in Tallahassee for local funding.

Thank you for all of your hard work, and make no mistake, we have had an enormous impact. You continue to make a difference for our students and the residents of our community.

Thank you.

Eduardo
