Health insurance benefits update

The College understands the fundamental importance of access to high-quality health care options and we have worked hard during the past years to ensure that faculty and staff have access to high-quality medical options.

I am pleased to inform you that yesterday, Oct. 20, 2009, the District Board of Trustees approved the College’s final recommendations regarding health insurance benefits for 2010, retaining Aetna as the College's health insurance provider. Originally, we faced a proposed renewal rate increase of 14.15 percent, but negotiated a final renewal rate increase of 4.38 percent.

For those individuals in the HMO employee-only plan, the College will continue to pay 100 percent of the cost of coverage. Those in the HMO-dependent and all POS plans will experience moderate increases, which were significantly reduced by our negotiation efforts.

Also, Aetna will maintain its "open access" program, allowing employees enrolled in HMO and POS plans to use any in-network doctor without a referral.

More information regarding these changes will be provided by the Division of Human Resources very shortly. The Online Open Enrollment Period begins Oct. 22 and ends Nov. 6, 2009.

As always, the College remains committed to providing convenient and affordable access to quality network providers.

Thank you.

Eduardo
