Welcome to a new academic year at MDC
It is with special enthusiasm that I welcome everyone to the 2009-2010 academic year. As we embark on the College's 50th anniversary, I am moved and inspired by the way every member of the MDC community has come together and worked so hard to get us where we are today.
While we have come a long way, we must prepare ourselves to work harder than ever toward sustaining our mission.
One of the College's main priorities this year will be to reintroduce our Local Option Bill, giving Miami-Dade County voters the opportunity to support the College with much-needed funding. Local funding remains a necessary avenue to financial stability. We will also focus our efforts on the new possibilities offered by the Obama administration. The heightened recognition of the pivotal role community colleges will play in the economic turnaround allows us to put a lot of good ideas into practice, and we are making every effort to attract these resources.
On the academic front, we will continue the mapping and integration of MDC’s Learning Outcomes into the entire curriculum to ensure that all students develop lifelong skills needed to be successful in work and life, and to participate in our society as global citizens. We also plan to implement four new Bachelor of Applied Science degrees in areas where the demand for educated workers is exceeding the supply. These include the fields of supervisory management, engineering technology, film and TV/video production, and the health sciences.
The College has made significant progress toward achieving the goals outlined in our 2004-2010 Strategic Plan; and during the fall term, I look forward to working with you to develop MDC's strategic direction for the next five years.
We have a full and exciting year ahead of us. Let's hit the ground running.
Thank you.
Eduardo
