Dr. Sandra Schultz named 2009 Florida Professor of the Year

This is a special day for Miami Dade College and for one of our highly esteemed colleagues: Dr. Sandra Schultz, North Campus professor of biology, health and wellness. I am thrilled to announce that Dr. Schultz has been named the 2009 U.S. Professor of the Year for the state of Florida by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). She will be honored this evening during a reception at the Folger Shakespeare Library Exhibition Hall in Washington, D.C.

In addition to this coveted honor, Dr. Schultz has received four Endowed Teaching Chairs, most recently the Anastasios and Maria Kyriakides Chair. She began her career at MDC in 1977 as a volleyball and softball coach, and then began teaching several physical education and activity courses. She also helped develop the Fitness and Wellness for Life course, which provides instruction on how to improve health and nutrition, as well as reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Recently, she began teaching this course online to students living all over the world.

Dr. Schultz is the author of several fitness textbooks. She is chair of North Campus' Wellness Day Committee, co-chair of the Learning Outcomes Coordinating Council, a member of MDC's Strategic Plan Committee and Learning Outcomes Assessment Team.

Dr. Schultz is the third MDC professor to receive this top recognition. Alberto Meza, professor of fine arts at Kendall Campus, won in 2003; and Dr. Ana Cruz, chair of the School of Business at Wolfson Campus, was selected in 2005. This record is unmatched in the state of Florida.

I am always proud of the accomplishments of MDC's outstanding faculty, but today is extra cause for celebration. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Schultz on this prestigious honor.

Thank you.

Eduardo
