MDC students impress at former President Clinton’s Global University Initiative meeting
A group of Miami Dade College students made a strong impression at the recent Clinton Global Initiative University meeting (CGI U) – a three-day event for students, national youth organizations and university officials to discuss solutions to pressing global issues.
With attendance limited to 1,300 students from around the world, competition to take part in the former President’s conference at the University of Miami was intense; but 30 Miami Dade College students were able to get a foot in the door as a result of their commitment to action.
Ximena Prugue, an industrial engineering major at MDC, was selected from a large pool of applicants to showcase her project, Giving the Green Light, which centers on replacing harmful kerosene lamps used by villagers in India with affordable sustainable solar-power lights.
Also representing the College at the third-annual CGI U were Stephanie Del Pino, Alexandra Rodriguez and Amanda Balarezo, whose Harvesting Hope Tilapia Food Project sparked community interest last fall during an “All-Nighter for Haiti.” The overnight social event helped raise $23,000 to develop a tilapia farm that would provide a source of sustainable income for residents in the Artibonite region in Haiti.
I would like to congratulate all of the students who participated in the Clinton Global Initiative University meeting. Your innovative ideas and dedication to making the world a better place for all citizens are a source of inspiration to the entire College community.
Thank you.
