Celebrating freedom and opportunity

Independence Day is a celebration of what we are all entitled to simply by our humanity: "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Family, fireworks, picnics and parades are all part of recognizing our country's historic birthday, but as citizens of this great democracy and employees and students of Democracy's College, we can celebrate these principles beyond just one day in July. We can embrace daily the hopes of our nation’s founders, that the fruits of a free society are available to all men and women.

Our basic freedoms — our principles of equality, our civil liberties, our right to justice and education — should never be taken for granted. While people in much of the world continue to struggle for these basic freedoms, we have the opportunity to celebrate their existence in our lives.

We also have good reason to celebrate the work of MDC. This institution is an expression of the best of this country, and each of you contributes to a genuine legacy of freedom and opportunity.

I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.

Eduardo
