Miami International Film Festival kicks off on Friday with <em>Looking For Eric</em>

The 27th edition of the Miami International Film Festival will kick off at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 5, with the 7 p.m. screening of Looking for Eric. Directed by Ken Loach and starring Eric Cantona, the film highlights the escape from life’s trials that soccer and its heroes offer fans. The screening will be followed by the Opening Night Gala at the Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College.

The 2010 festival, March 5 - March 14, features a lineup of 115 films from 45 countries, including five world premieres, 22 North American premieres and 14 U.S. premieres. Among the films screening at MIFF 2010 are the dramas City Island, starring Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies; Please Give, starring Amanda Peet, Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt; documentary films, including the international film festival circuit premiere of The Beatles on Record and the U.S. premiere of Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel. The festival will also feature the critically acclaimed premiere of Sweden’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and several Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar contenders, including: Peru’s The Milk of Sorrow and Argentina’s The Secret in Their Eyes, which will serve as the official Awards Night Film on Saturday, March 13. 

Highlights of this year's festival include a career achievement tribute to acclaimed German actress and director Margarethe von Trotta (The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, Sheer Madness, Love and Fear, Rosenstrasse, I Am the Other Woman); a cinematic celebration of The Accordion Kings; the REEL Seminars series of panel discussions and educational seminars with film-industry leaders and noted filmmakers; the inaugural Diesel Online Shorts Competition; the Ibero-American Competition; Cutting the Edge; Cinema 360°; Florida Focus; and our opening- and closing-night galas.
