MDC makes history as first community college recognized by The Washington Center for civic engagement

Today, Miami Dade College is making history once again as the first community college to be recognized for civic engagement by The Washington Center (TWC) and the first institution to receive multiple awards from this prestigious organization.

MDC joins Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; Santa Clara University; The College of New Jersey; Wagner College; and Western Carolina University at TWC's Academic Affairs Awards Luncheon and 35th Anniversary Gala, where we are one of only six institutions across the nation to be honored, the first community college to be recognized for service by this organization, and the only Florida college or university receiving awards.

In addition to receiving the 2010 Higher Education Civic Engagement award, I am also pleased to announce that Professor Mercedes Medina, who teaches at MDC's Law Center, will receive the Faculty Leader of the Year award.

I would like to thank Joshua Young, director of the Center for Community Involvement, and all of you for your continued commitment to civic engagement, service-learning and faculty excellence at the College.

Eduardo
