MDC's The Reporter Named Top Student Newspaper in the State

Just one year after merging its three campus student newspapers to form one collegewide student newspaper, Miami Dade College's The Reporter has been named the top community college newspaper in the state. This latest recognition of MDC's excellence in student journalism came during the Florida College System Activities Association awards banquet in Orlando, where Reporter staffers won 10 first-place honors.

Three student reporters from Miami Dade College received inner circle awards for placing in the top three in at least three categories:

 • Photo Editor Gregory Castillo won four first-place awards: News Photo, Feature Photo, Sports Photo, and Picture Story; Gregory also won a second-place award in the Sports Column category.
 • Editor-in-Chief Monique O. Madan won two first-place awards: News Story and Editorial, and a third-place award for In-Depth Reporting.
 • Managing Editor Lazaro Gamio won a first-place award in Illustration, a second-place award for Design and a third-place award in the Editorial Cartoon category.

A complete list of student award recipients is included at the end of this message.

I would like to congratulate the entire staff of The Reporter and thank Manolo Barco, media advisor to The Reporter, for his outstanding leadership.

Thank you.

Eduardo
