Miami International Film Festival Announces 2012 Programming

On March 2 through March 11, movie fans from around the world will converge in Miami to celebrate the 29th anniversary of Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), the only major film festival presented and hosted by a college or university.

In addition to the many learning opportunities the beloved festival offers, this year's lineup features more than 100 films from 35 countries, including 17 world/international premieres, and 20 North American and U.S. premieres. Among the films screening at MIFF 2012 are the much-anticipated Spanish/Cuban zombie comedy Juan of the Dead; Lawrence Kasdan’s Darling Companion, starring Oscar winners Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline and Dianne Wiest; and Oscar nominee Joe Berlinger’s Sundance Film Festival hit about the 25th anniversary of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” project, Under African Skies.

A world premiere will raise the curtain on Friday, March 2, with Mariachi Gringo, as the official Opening Night Film; the cast includes Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza, X-Men star Shawn Ashmore and Mexican singer Lila Downs. The Argentinian box-office smash Chinese Take-Away, starring Ricardo Darín, will serve as the official Awards Night Film on Saturday, March 10.

A number of special events and competitions will take place during the festival, including a career achievement tribute to veteran Hollywood character actor and Oscar nominee Robert Loggia (Jagged Edge, Scarface, Big); the Knight Ibero-American and Knight Documentary competitions; and newly added programs, such as the Lexus Opera Prima Competition. A description of these events and others may be found on the Miami International Film Festival website.

Information on employee and student ticket packages will be distributed next week. In the meantime, you may wish to browse the online MIFF Film Guide or download a PDF of the print version.

Thank you to Jaie Laplante, our festival’s executive director, and all of the MIFF staff who work year-round to make this event a success.

See you at the movies.

Eduardo
