Michael Townsel

Michael TownselAs instructor, mentor, and exemplar, Dr. Townsel enhances the educational culture and expands the possibilities in the school and throughout the community.

Dr. Townsel has demonstrated a unique understanding and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of his students. In his daily Research classes, he inspires, motivates, supports, and escorts the students through the transition from their traditional high school experience to Miami Dade College and beyond. His lessons related to the college application process encourage students to reach beyond their immediate outlook; he is able to build their courage and confidence to strive for a level of excellence they have not yet recognized in themselves.

His high academic, social, and moral standards are internalized by his students, leading them to exceed even their own expectations. Whether popping into a homeroom to informally congratulate the students with perfect attendance or distributing formal certificates to students during an Honor Roll luncheon, Dr. Townsel takes every opportunity to make the students feel accomplished and appreciated. Each year’s seniors are not simply accepted at universities; they become faces on his mural of congratulations greeting every person who enters our office. With a smile or gentle jibe, acts of kindness are praised and unwise choices are discouraged. Students always feel his respect and love.

Dr. Townsel’s professionalism, organization, presentation skills, and nurturing demeanor serve as paradigms for all his colleagues’ at all four campuses of School for Advanced Studies and the Academy for Advanced Academics. Continually striving for opportunities to improve our ability to meet the needs of the students and their parents, he eagerly shares his always evolving approaches to data collection and analysis, techniques for reaching out to the parents and community, and lesson plans for research classes.
