Miami, January 10, 2014 - The School for Advanced Studies "We the People" (WTP) team , representing Florida's 26th Congressional District, took First Place in the January 10, 2014 WTP state competition at the Barry University School of Law in Orlando, Florida. There are 27 Congressional Districts in Florida and the competition included the best school from each congressional district from around the state. To be named as 2014 State Champions, the SAS team had to make the highest score among these 27 teams.
The team is sponsored by SAS Advanced Placement Social Studies teacher Dr. Derrick Johnson. The SAS team is comprised of students in Dr. Johnson's Constitutional Law class at SAS this year and they are pictured in the attached photo along with Dr. Johnson and Ms. Maria Ruiz-Legg who teaches Advanced Placement English at SAS.
"We the People" is promoted in Florida through the Florida Law Related Education Association. It is designed to help students discover the contemporary relevance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The culminating activity is a competition which simulates a congressional hearing in which students "testify" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.
The SAS We the People (WTP) team will represent the state of Florida in an effort to become National Champions April 26-29, 2014 in Fairfax, Virginia.
