Miami, February 1, 2013 - The School for Advanced Studies Kendall Campus "We the People" (WTP) team , representing Florida's 25th Congressional District, took Second Place in the January 11, 2013  WTP state competition in Orlando. This is an amazing accomplishment in view of the fact that most of the high schools who competed in Orlando have built their programs over the course of decades. SAS initiated their WTP program just last school year and are already experiencing tremendous success.  There are 27 Congressional Districts in Florida and 27 schools competed in Orlando, so taking Second Place is quite noteworthy.

The team is sponsored by SAS Advanced Placement Social Studies teacher Dr. Derrick Johnson. The SAS team is comprised of students in Dr. Johnson's Constitutional Law class at SAS this year and they are pictured in the adjacent photo.

"We the People" is promoted in Florida through the Florida Law Related Education Association. It is designed to help students discover the contemporary relevance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The culminating activity is a competition which simulates a congressional hearing in which students "testify" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.
