Reporter Alum Selected For Summer Internship At The Dallas Morning News

By Mark Pulaski

Gregory Castillo, a senior staff photographer for The Reporter, has been selected for a paid internship at the Dallas Morning News next summer.

Castillo, 21, will work for the paper’s news desk, serving as a reporter, photographer and videographer. The internship runs 12 weeks and begins in May of 2014.

“This affirms all the training that I’ve gained at The Reporter and the Miami Herald,” said Castillo, a journalism major and a founding member of The Reporter, “This is going to be an incredible challenge and opportunity.”

Castillo has spent the last year at the Miami Herald as an intern, honing his multimedia skills as a producer on the Continuous News Desk and as a staff photographer. This past October he was awarded first-place in the Associated Collegiate Press Photo Excellence Awards at the 92nd Annual Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association Convention in New Orleans.

Two months ago, Castillo won four first-place awards from the Florida College System Publications Association: News Story, Feature Story, News Photo and Sports Photo. He has received eight first-place honors from the FCSPA during his tenure at The Reporter.

Castillo joins a distinguished list of Miami Dade College student newspaper alumni to intern at the DMN in recent years including: former Reporter editor-in-chief Monique Madan and former Falcon Times editor-in-chief Laura C. Morel.

“I can’t wait to go experience a new city and new challenges,” Castillo said, “I’ve never left so far from the nest and I know it’s going to be tough, but it’s worth it.”
