Criteria for Program Selection

Enrollment in the program is limited. Meeting the admissions requirements does not guarantee program acceptance. For this reason, the following criteria are used to determine which applicants will be admitted. The criteria listed below are used for the selection of students. Applicants will be ranked according to the number of general education courses required in program that have been successfully completed (see table below). Please note that there is no waiting list.

  • Ranking of general education courses completed
  • Overall Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Florida residents will be given preference over non-residents, as well as students who are reapplying to the program, if they have completed all prerequisites as of September 1st of the previous year.

Top Priority 1 SPC 1017, HIM 2472
  2 SPC 1017
Lowest Priority 3 HIM 2472

*Students must satisfy the CGS 1060 requirement prior to entering the program.

Final acceptance will be based on the submission of all required documents received at the mandatory program orientation session.

Transfer Students

If you have previously attended any college or university other than Miami Dade College, you must arrange for that institution to send official transcripts to the Health Information Technology Program at the Medical Campus by June 1st for an August acceptance and October 1st for January acceptance.

Students who have attended foreign colleges must submit original transcripts and a certified English translation beforeMay 1st or October 1st to the Registrar at the Medical Campus for evaluation. For details, please call 305-237-4160. Students who have attended a foreign allied health or nursing program should consult the Miami Dade College catalog for more information about how to have their transcripts, diplomas, and credentials evaluated for U.S. equivalency.

All Medical Campus students must complete the FDLE Waiver and Statement form. This form is to authorize dissemination to Miami Dade College - Medical Campus of any national criminal history record that may pertain to you.

In addition, all program students must complete a "background check" through the identified MDC agent and cleared by the 1st day of class. Depending on your program of study an additional background check may be required. In addition, prior to entry into a clinical site, some clinical sites will require more frequent background checks and clearance.

Successful completion of the MDC level two background check process or completion of a MDC nursing/health sciences program does not guarantee a graduate's eligibility for participation in the professional credentialing process or for related employment. Credentialing agencies and health care employers may have additional eligibility criteria not required by an educational institution. Individuals who have been arrested or convicted of any felony crime during the last 15 years are strongly urged to inquire directly of the licensing board in the jurisdiction in which they intend to practice.
