Our D. E. Lab is located in room 2210, second floor of the library in the north-east corner. Developmental Education lab instructors provide reading and writing assistance to MDC North Campus students registered in any of our developmental education courses: REA0007 (PDF), REA0017 (PDF), ENC0015 (PDF), and ENC0025 (PDF). These courses are 4-credit lecture/lab courses, and thus lab is a requirement of the class. Hours vary - check here for times. Group orientations are provided at the beginning of every term. During students’ weekly visits to the lab, they will sign in and out at the front desk.
All students must purchase both class and lab materials as directed in the syllabi. Following a given timetable, students will complete a weekly set of lab assignments to fulfill their lab requirement. Instruction and assignments are tailored to address each student's particular course. In personal consultations, lab instructors will review each student’s progress and performance and validate their work, in writing, on the student’s lab syllabus. This syllabus serves as a written record to document fulfillment of the lab requirement. Students’ progress and performance will be regularly reported to class instructors. Our lab is offered in a drop-in format to allow students a flexible schedule to complete their required lab assignments. Students may visit any time we are open; however, students may not use the lab during their class hours. A fully validated lab syllabus satisfies the 1-credit requirement.
We encourage students to seek assistance at any time, including with their class assignments (by permission of the class instructor). We highly recommend that students ask questions and consult with our lab instructors. We do not offer proofreading, editing, or grading services. Lab instructors provide assistance to students by: helping to identify areas of weakness; and explaining the skills they need to be able to identify and correct errors in their own writing. The final proofreading and editing of a paper is the student’s own responsibility. We also expect everyone to show courtesy to each other, silence cell phones, abstain from answering calls or texts, and refrain from eating or drinking during lab visits.
Our English and Communications department offers excellent Writing Workshops that are free to all MDC North Campus students. We encourage students to participate. Instructors may recommend specific workshops and may even offer extra credit for attending. Topics include essay development, MLA/APA style, and grammar. For more information or to sign up, call 305-237-1630. Seating is limited.
