Alan Ngim earned a D.M.A. degree in piano performance specializing in chamber music and accompanying at the University of Miami where he received a University Fellowship. His Master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy is from Northwestern University, and he holds undergraduate degrees in computer science and piano performance from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he graduated with honors in both areas.

He also studied piano at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. Dr. Ngim has taught at North Central College in Naperville, IL, San Jose City College, in San Jose, CA, and New World School of the Arts in downtown Miami. Afrequent performer of 20th century music, Dr. Ngim particularly enjoys the works of Olivier Messiaen.

His doctoral dissertation was a study and performance of Messiaen's two-piano work, Vision de l'amen. Other collaborations include Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, and selections from Vingt Regards sur l'enfant Jesus with Momentum Dance Company, and Oiseaux Exotiqueswith Florida International University.

Before accepting the full-time faculty position at Miami Dade College, Dr. Ngim worked as a collaborative pianist for University of Miami, Florida International University, New World Symphony, and New World School of the Arts. He continues to work as the principal pianist for the Miami Children's Chorus and as a pianist at the Universal Truth Center.

Recent projects with Miami Dade College include conducting the Miami Dade Chamber Ensemble in musical theater productions of Purlieand Guys and Dolls, and in an experimental performance piece featuring the music of composer Terry Riley. Dr. Ngim serves as an adjudicator for Music Teachers Association competitions in Dade and Broward counties.
