STEM-MIA: Academically Talented STEM student Scholarship

Overview

STEM-Mia (“my STEM”) is a National Science Foundation funded project that provides scholarships and supports to academically talented, low-income STEM students at MDC Padrón Campus.

Over a five-year period, the NSF - S-STEM funds will support 45 MDC students with scholarships and wrap around services toward preparing them for Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) careers, which are in high-demand and critical to building a competitive workforce that will help grow America’s economy. Enrolled scholars will take classes full-time and are expected to complete the program in two years and participate in supports that research has proven effective in promoting achievement among STEM students.

  • Faculty mentoring
    • Dedicated mentoring by STEM faculty
  • STEMinars - These are seminars where STEM professionals share their work and enhance student growth and professional development
    • STEM presentations
    • Field trips
    • Networking with industry professionals
    • Research conferences
  • Two one-credit interdisciplinary courses
    • STEM support
    • STEM transfer
  • STEM Summer Academy
    • Paid summer classes
    • Paid summer research experiences (FIU, UF, MDC)
  • Scholarship for major terms (fall and spring)
