Dr. Walter McCollum, a Fulbright Scholar, is Campus Vice President, Miami Dade College Online. He has served as Dean of Student Affairs and faculty at many universities where he taught and mentored doctoral learners in the Schools of Business, Management and Technology, Education and Psychology over the past 14 years.
His faculty appointments include: New York University, University of the District of Columbia, Central Michigan University, Upper Iowa University, Northcentral University, Colorado State-Global University, University of Maryland Global Campus, Capella University, University of Phoenix and Walden University. He has chaired and served on over 100 dissertation committees with an objective to increase the number of African American Male doctoral degree holders.
Dr. McCollum has worked as a senior leader in top multi-national corporations in the areas of change management, organizational development, quality management, and project/program management and business process re-engineering. Prior to his corporate experience, Dr. McCollum served 13 ½ years in the United States Air Force both abroad and stateside in Information Management and Communication specialties.
He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology; a Master of Arts Degree in Management; and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Change. He is also a graduate of the Penn State Academic Leadership Academy, a Fellow of the Association of Governing Boards for Leadership and Governance in Higher Education, and a Peer Evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission and Middle States Commission.
Dr. McCollum completed a Fulbright award in Amman, Jordan where he advised the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on hiring practices for university presidents, designed and developed an evaluative model for performance evaluation and made recommendations for the academic congressional mandate for hiring university presidents in the Kingdom of Jordan. He has written seven books and is published in many peer reviewed journals.
Dr. McCollum is passionate about impacting positive social change internationally. Over the past 15 years he has spent time in South Africa, Costa Rica and Haiti working on international initiatives. In South Africa, Dr. McCollum spent time in local township schools and AIDS orphanages exploring opportunities to better support children who had AIDS continue their educational opportunities. In Costa Rica, he led a delegation to rebuild houses on an indigenous reservation near Cahuita so locals could cook on open fire, which is part of their culture. In 2018, Walter McCollum Education Foundation built a primary school in Haiti to increase literacy, gender equality, and decrease poverty.
In his spare time, Dr. McCollum enjoys riding his Goldwing motorcycle and taking in beautiful scenery.
