AmeriCorps video detailing volunteer opportunities and member benefits

About Us

AmeriCorps Excellence in STEM (ACES) is based out of Wolfson Campus and offers STEM tutoring and study skills support to underserved high school and/or and college students in the Miami community.

Members commit to 1 year of service and are dedicated to building strong relationships with students. They assess the knowledge, study skills, and emotional factors that inhibit students from succeeding in their STEM courses; and develop a strategy for progress. Members create their own schedule to fit 675 hours for the 2020 year (15 hours/week). We are currently partnered with Miami Jackson Senior High School and iTECH at Thomas A. Educational Center.

    Join as a Volunteer

Joining as a volunteer is different from applying for an ACES membership. Volunteers are individuals who enjoy helping others and desire to make a difference in their community. Though volunteers may not be able to commit to as much as 675 hours, they are still willing and ready to offer their assistance with whatever free time they have.

    Benefits of being a volunteer

Though volunteers do not share in the ACES membership benefits, they do enjoy a few perks of their own. Every person that signs up to volunteer benefits from the following:

    • President's Volunteer Service Award (see requirements)
    • Network with community organizations
    • Gain real world experience

How do I decide between being a member and being a volunteer?

You may want to volunteer if:

    • You are not a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
    • You cannot commit to serve 675 hours (15 hours/week)
    • You are younger than 17 years old
    • You are not strong in any STEM subject

If you would like to join as a volunteer, complete the following application and send it to sriveras@mdc.edu or drop it of at Wolfson Campus Office 1503.
