COURSE TITLE:
NURSING ETHICS (ELECTIVE) NUR 2826
DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to give students basic knowledge about ethical issues,
ethical principles, and ethical decision making essential for beginning nursing
practice as an ADN graduate. This course will develop the student's awareness of
professional, cultural, organizational, and societal values in nursing.
Course Content:
Nursing ethical axioms included: codes of ethics, advocacy role, the concept of
caring related to ethics, standards of practice and position statements/laws
that affect nursing ethics.
INSTRUCTIONAL
OBJECTIVES:
1.
The nursing student develops awareness of how personal and professional
values influence nurse-client, nurse-health care
professional, and
nurse-organizational relationships.
2.
The nursing student respects the client's and family's right
to make
ethical decisions based on cultural
values and beliefs.
3.
The nursing student explains the role of culture, religion,
community and societal values
in setting health care
priorities and resolving
ethical dilemmas.
4.
The nursing student develops a philosophy of nursing practice
based on nursing standards,
nursing codes of ethics,
American Hospital Association's
Patient Bill of Rights,
nurse-client
advocacy, and caring.
5.
The nursing student explains how the following major ethical
principles are used as a
foundation for ethical decisions: Respect
for autonomy, beneficence, justice,
non-malfeasance, veracity,
fidelity, and respect for others.
6.
The nursing student analyzes ethical dilemmas using an
ethical
decision-making model.
