By Roslyn Bailey-Oddman
Wolfson
Campus top officials, administrators, faculty and staff
attired in academic regalia to welcome over two hundred
first-time-in-college students at the first Freshman Convocation
on Tuesday, October 12, 2004. The event marked the freshman
classes' official induction into the college. Speakers at
the Convocation spoke about the growth development that
the new students will experience at MDC and urged them to
become involved in campus activities.
Campus
President Rolando Montoya welcomed the students and encouraged
them to have a commitment to learning. He requested that students
use professors as mentors and guides and challenged the students
to grow intellectually. The
Convocation Address was presented by two community representatives.
First, Mr. Wali Jones, Community Affairs Miami Heat Organization,
challenged the freshman students to think critically and take
the time to pursue for their academic potential. Second, Mr.
Jeffrey Green, Community Relations, Miami FBI gave the students
seven motivating points of advice for their time in college.
Dean
of Students, Herbert Robinson suggested that students get to
know their rights and responsibilities and to fully utilize
Student Services available to them at the campus. Student Government
Association President, Ivan Urena stressed the importance of
getting involved in campus and community activities. Dean of
Academic Affairs Lourdes Oroza empathized the importance of
declaring a major. She then lead the students in a “Cap
Ceremony” when students committed to completing their
degree intentions.
The Freshman Convocation was produced by Roslyn Bailey-Oddman,
Director of the First Year Experience. She worked closely with
Jan Burlison, Director of Retention and Transition Services,
and the First Year Advisory Board Members to create an inspiring
and welcoming event for students. Ms. Oddman is extremely grateful
for the assistance and collaboration she received from the entire
Wolfson Campus.
