Gail A. Hawks received her B.S. in Comprehensive Social
Studies from Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio and her M.A. and Ph.D. in
Economics and Economics Education from Ohio University. She has taught in Public
Schools for 11 years in Ohio and has more than twenty years of collegiate
teaching experience in Ohio and Florida. She has worked in an import/export
business in Philadelphia, PA and as a private consultant in Florida.
Dr. Hawks initiated the Center for Economic Education at
Miami-Dade Community College in 1987. This was the first Center in Economic
Education at a community college in the national to be affiliated with the
National Council on Economic Education and the Florida Council on Economic
Education. The Center works with teachers K-12 in Monroe and Miami-Dade
Counties. Since the Center’s beginning, it has had state and national winners
in teacher competitions each year.
Within the Business Studies Department, Dr. Hawks, has
written curriculum competencies for the Micro and Macro economics courses, and
developed a curriculum for the Business Logistics course. She served, as Faculty
Senate Vice President for years, is the United Faculty for MDC Vice President
for the Wolfson Campus. She served as Chair for the Re-Engineering Committee for
Budget and Planning. She serves on the Graduation Committee, Environmental
Ethics Institute, Miami Book Fair International Logistics Committee for Home
Improvements, and Student Enhancement Committee. She served on numerous
screening and other committees as appropriate.
Dr. Hawks has served on several State Committees appointed by
the Florida Department of Education and is on the International Committee for
the National Council on Economic Education. She is on the Editorial Review Board
of Directors for the professional journal, Journal of Economics, and
Economic Education Research.
In 1993 and again in 2000, Dr. Hawks received an Endowed
Teaching Chair. She has also been the top state advisor, postsecondary, for the
Florida Stock Market Simulation, an activity she utilizes in her Microeconomics
classes.
