President's Volunteer Service Award

The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve.

The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.  Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.  The Institute of Civic Engagement and Democracy (iCED) , with assistance from Student Life, began promoting the award and hosting a college-wide ceremony in 2007.

Award Levels:

  1. President’s Call to Service Award: 4,000 hours over a lifetime
  2. Gold: 250 or more hours in a 12-month period
  3. Silver: 175 to 249 hours in a 12-month period 
  4. Bronze: 100 to 174 hours in a 12 month period 
  5. Group Awards: student clubs and organizations that collectively complete more than 200 hours of service can also earn the award

Award Package:

  • An official PVSA lapel pin
  • A personalized certificate of achievement
  • A congratulatory letter from the President of the United States
  • An invitation to an award banquet in the summer sponsored by The Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy and Miami Dade College

Miami Dade College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate and baccalaureate degrees.
