Wolfson Jazz Ensembles
The jazz ensembles at Wolfson Campus consist of three groups of exceptional students. The Horace Silver group takes its name from the legendary pianist and composer of the 1950s and '60s. The Blue Note group pays tribute to the famed jazz record label of numerous classic and groundbreaking recordings. Both groups help young jazz musicians develop by presenting a wide range of jazz styles.
The program's most mature group, the Hard Bop Jazz Ensemble, has included some of South Florida's finest emerging musicians. The ensemble has performed at major jazz festivals in Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. The group is highly decorated, receiving DownBeat magazine awards in 2003 and 2007.
In April 2009, the Hard Bop Jazz Ensemble performed at the North Texas Jazz Festival and received five awards, including Outstanding Soloist, Outstanding College Group and the coveted Outstanding Musician of the Festival.
Notable alumni from these groups include DownBeat award-winning saxophionist Rocky Yera, saxophonist Hery Paz and DownBeat award-winning pianist Kemuel Roig. Drummer Omar Tavarez and bassist Leo Brooks are currently on tour with international recording artist Pitbull.
