GED Preparation

The General Education Development (GED) test is also referred to as the High School equivalency test. Students take the GED test to demonstrate mastery of Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing. Upon successful completion of the GED test, a candidate is awarded a State of Florida high school diploma and is considered a high school graduate. Our program is customized based on your needs with experienced instructors and tutors ready to assist you throughout the program.

Campus Registration Information

Requirements to begin the GED program:

  1. Bring a valid government issued photo identification.
  2. Take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), a two to three-hour timed exam. Your test results will determine how you are placed in the GED program.

Registration process:

  1. Come to the School of Continuing Education & Professional Development in Room 2402 (Building 2, 4th. floor) and bring valid government issued photo identification. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  2. Complete the non-credit admission form and receive a pass for the TABE.
  3. Take the pass to the Bursar (Building 1, first floor) to pay a $15 one-time fee.
  4. To take the TABE take the paid receipt to the Testing Department located in Room 1220 (Building 1, 2nd. Floor) together with your valid government issued photo identification and one other form of identification. The test is administered on a walk-in basis from Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  5. Bring TABE results and your identification (as described above) to the GED department, Room 2402. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to report your scores and be advised.
  6. You will receive a class schedule.
  7. Pay $31.50 tuition at the Bursar's (Building 1, first floor).
  8. Take the tuition paid receipt and class schedule to your assigned classroom.

  2. Complete an MDC registration form and receive a referral for the TABE test.
  3. Take the referral to the Bursar office, A115 to pay a $15 one-time fee.
  4. To take the TABE you must take the paid receipt to the Testing Department located in Building A together with your valid government issued photo identification. The test is administered on a walk-in basis from Monday through Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 am to 12:00 p.m.
  5. Bring TABE results and your identification to the GED Lab (Room D303). Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to report your scores.
  6. You will receive a registration form to turn in at the Bursar office.
  7. Pay tuition of $31.50 at the Bursar's office (A115).
  8. Take the tuition paid receipt and class schedule to the GED Lab, Room D303 on the day you begin classes.

*Additionally, minors need:


  1. Proof of school withdrawal
  2. Picture ID
  3. Parents:
    1. Picture ID,
    2. Sign the following documents: Age Waiver, FERPA, and Guardian Permission

  2. If you are new to this program or were previously at the College, please come to the Adult Education GED Lab, Building 5, second floor, room 5231. Hours of operation are 8-4 M-R, and 8-2 on Friday.
  3. You will complete some information and receive a pass for the TABE.
  4. Take the pass to the Bursar (Building R, first floor) to pay a $15 one-time fee for the test.

Testing required:

  1. Go to the Testing Department located in Building R, fifth floor. Please have your paid test receipt, a valid government issued photo identification and one other form of identification. The test is administered on a walk-in basis from Monday through Thursday 8:30 to 4:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:30 to 1:00 p.m.
  2. You will receive your test results when you have completed the test.

To register for class:

  1. Bring your TABE results and your identification (as described above) to the GED Lab (Room 5231). Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 to 12:30 p.m. to report your scores and be advised.
  2. You will receive a printed class schedule.
  3. Take this schedule and an ID to the Bursar's (Building R, first floor) to pay your tuition ($31.50).
  4. Bring the tuition paid receipt and class schedule to the GED Lab, Room 5231 on your first day of class.

GED Lab Hours of Operation:

  1. The GED Lab, Room Number 5231 is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 2:00 p.m. and Monday through Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Phone number: 305-237-0555.

Registration Process:

  1. Visit the School of Continuing Education & Professional Development Registration Office in Room 1124 (Building 1, first floor) and bring your valid government issued photo identification. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 P.M., Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
  2. Complete an MDC registration form and receive a pass for the TABE.
  3. Go to the Testing Department (room 1160) and receive a referral form to pay for the TABE.
  4. Take the pass to the Bursar's Office (room 1154) to pay a $15 one-time fee for the TABE Test.
  5. To take the TABE, take the paid receipt to the Testing Department (room 1160), with your valid government issued photo identification and one other form of identification. The test is administered on a walk-in basis during the following times: Monday through Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; On Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  6. After taking the test, bring your TABE results and your identification (as described above) to the Registration Office (Room 1124).
  7. You will receive a class schedule.
  8. Go the Bursar's Office to pay for your classes: $31.50 for the semester (two terms).
  9. Take your paid schedule to class.

Requirements to begin the GED program:

  1. Please bring your government issued valid picture ID or Driver’s License to the School of Continuing Education and Professional Development office located in Room 3116 at Padrón campus.
  2. You will be admitted to Miami Dade College and receive a student number.
  3. You will be asked a few questions to determine your eligibility in the program.

Test to be taken:

  1. The same day that you are admitted, you may take the TABE Placement test by going to the testing department, Room 1110 with the referral form that will be given by the GED staff.
  2. The cost of the test is $15.
  3. This placement test will determine the level of proficiency and entry into the program.
  4. The test is administered on a walk-in basis between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday and between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Friday.

In order to obtain results:

  1. Students will get a print out of the results immediately following the test. Bring the results to the School of Continuing Education and Professional Development office, Room 3116.

Registration process:

  1. At the School of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Room 3116 you must complete the intake forms.
  2. You will sign up for an orientation session and then you will be registered for a class according to your level.
  3. Take the class schedule to the Bursar’s office (Building 1, Window 5) to pay tuition of $31.50 per college term. Each term may consist of two or four months depending on when you enroll.
  4. You must bring your paid receipt to the first day of class.

General class sessions:

  1. Bring a current/valid government issued photo identification.
  2. Take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), a two to three-hour timed exam. Your test results will determine how you are placed in the GED program.

Registration process:

  1. Come to the School of Continuing Education & Professional Development in Room 1158 (Building 1, first floor) and bring a current/valid government issued photo identification. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  2. Fill out form AR-203 (Non-Credit) and take it to Admission’s Office located in Building 3, first floor to be admitted and obtain your student number or MDC-ID.
  3. You will receive a referral form for the Testing Department located in Building 3, first floor room 3104 and a receipt for the Bursar’s office (Building 1, first floor room 1168) to pay a $15 one-time fee.
  4. The test is administered on a walk-in basis from Monday through Thursday 8:30 to 4:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:30 to 1:00 p.m.
  5. Bring TABE results and your identification (as described above) to our office room 1158 and complete the in-take forms required by the program.
  6. Get your registration schedule, pay your tuition ($31.50) at the Bursar’s and receive general information about rooms and building locations.
  7. Please be advised that a minimum score of 4.0 in each subject of the TABE test is required for registration at Wolfson Campus.

General class sessions:

  1. Two morning sessions Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 12 noon and one afternoon session Monday through Friday, 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.
  2. Evening session Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 9:50 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can take the computer-based test at one of the seven Miami Dade College Campuses where it is offered: Hialeah, Homestead, Padrón, Kendall, North, West, and Wolfson.

All candidates need to pay the test fee: Computer-based test is $128

Your diploma will have the words "State of Florida" and "High School Diploma" on it. It is just as valid as the diplomas given at any state high school.

At least 16 years of age. Students who are 16 or 17 years old are eligible to prepare for the test at the college as long as they have parental approval and a high school withdrawal form signed by their high school principal.

  1. You must complete the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE). There is a one-time fee of $15 for taking the TABE.

  2. Bring your test results and a valid government issued photo ID for registration.
  3. You will need to secure a student ID number through a campus Student Center.
  4. A GED staff member will provide you with your schedule.

  5. Pay at the Bursar's Office.

Low TABE scores shouldn't stop you from seeking your GED. MDC has specific courses in the Adult Education department which can help you get to the 9.0 level that is necessary for the GED courses.

Yes. Home-study students must comply with the same requirements as students who are no longer attending Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

The GED program is a blended course. There are instructors and tutors available to answer questions and assist students in the use of the computers. It is also possible to use paper and pencil materials for students who wish to do so.

Classes and/or labs are available during the morning, afternoon, evening, Saturdays and GED Preparation Online Program.

Tuition is $31.50 per semester.

The GED preparation program allows students to work at their own pace. Each student enters at a different level and dedicates varying amounts of time to studying for the GED. In order to remain enrolled, students must meet the program attendance requirement. Regular attendance in the GED Lab will allow a student to complete the program faster. When a student feels he/she is ready to take the exam, a practice test is highly recommended. The practice test has been shown to be a very good predictor of a student's score on the test. If the score on this practice test shows the student is ready, GED staff will assist the student in registering for the GED Exam.

All GED learning materials are in the classroom. There is no textbook required. However, if you want to study at home, please discuss this with the instructor.

Yes. We offer a GED Preparation Online Program where you can study from home using your computer and a web account that we can provide for you. Go to your local campus for testing to determine eligibility.
